OBEY out love for GOD

OBEY OUT OF LOVE FOR GOD, NOT A DESIRE TO PROVE YOUR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS

There is a kind of obedience that God desires—and there is a kind of obedience that looks spiritual on the outside but is secretly fueled by the need to prove something.

You can obey religiously and still have a heart that is far from God.

You can serve, pray, fast, give, preach, sacrifice, and discipline yourself—and yet, somewhere deep within, you may be saying:

“God, look at what I have done. Now You owe me.”

That is not intimacy. That is performance.

True obedience is not an attempt to earn God's love. It is the response of a heart that has already encountered His love. 🌿

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15

Jesus did not say, “If you want to prove that you are righteous, keep My commandments.”

He connected obedience to love.

---

 1. OBEDIENCE IS A RESPONSE TO LOVE

When you truly understand the mercy of God, obedience stops feeling like merely a burden and becomes a privilege.

You begin to say:

“Lord, I obey You because I love You.”

Not:

“Lord, I obey You so people will see how spiritual I am.”

Not:

“I obey You so You will bless me.”

Not:

“I obey You because I want to prove that I am better than others.”

The mature believer eventually discovers that the greatest motivation for obedience is not fear of punishment or desire for recognition—it is love for the One who first loved us.

“We love him, because he first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19

Before God asks you to do something for Him, He wants you to understand what He has already done for you.

---

 2. SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS CAN HIDE BEHIND RELIGIOUS ACTIVITY

One of the most dangerous spiritual conditions is when a person begins using obedience as evidence of their superiority.

You fast more than someone.

You pray longer.

You know more Scripture.

You give more.

You serve more.

You appear more disciplined.

And slowly, without realizing it, the heart begins to whisper:

“I am more righteous than them.”

That is a dangerous place.

Jesus confronted this attitude repeatedly.

The Pharisee in Luke 18 prayed, but his prayer became an advertisement of his own righteousness.

“God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are...” — Luke 18:11

Notice something profound:

He was talking to God, but he was measuring himself against people.

His religious activity had become a platform for self-exaltation.

Meanwhile, the tax collector simply cried:

“God be merciful to me a sinner.” — Luke 18:13

Jesus said that the humble man went home justified.

Why?

Because God is not merely examining what your hands are doing.

He is examining why your heart is doing it. 🕊️

---

 3. GOD IS MORE INTERESTED IN THE HEART BEHIND THE OBEDIENCE

Two people can perform the same action while having completely different motives.

Two people can give.

Two people can preach.

Two people can serve.

Two people can pray.

Two people can obey.

But heaven sees what people cannot see:

the motive.

“For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7

This should humble us.

Because sometimes we ask:

“Did I do the right thing?”

But God may be asking:

“Why did you do it?”

Did you forgive because you love Me?

Or because you wanted to appear mature?

Did you serve because you love Me?

Or because you needed recognition?

Did you give because you love Me?

Or because you wanted people to admire your generosity?

Did you obey because I spoke?

Or because you wanted to establish your own righteousness?

God is not only interested in the action. He is interested in the altar from which the action came.

---

 4. YOU CANNOT IMPRESS GOD WITH YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

This is where grace becomes deeply humbling.

Your righteousness is not something you manufacture so that God will finally accept you.

Scripture says:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8

And Paul declares:

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.” — Titus 3:5

This destroys boasting.

You cannot stand before God and say:

“Look how good I have become.”

Instead, you stand amazed and say:

“Lord, look how merciful You have been.”

That is humility.

Grace does not make obedience unnecessary.

Grace changes the reason you obey.

You no longer obey to become loved.

You obey because you are loved.

---

 5. LOVE WILL TAKE YOU WHERE PRIDE NEVER COULD

There will be moments when obedience requires you to do something nobody applauds.

God may tell you to forgive when you have every reason to hold a grudge.

He may tell you to remain silent when your flesh wants to defend itself.

He may tell you to walk away from something your emotions desperately want.

He may ask you to wait when you want immediate answers.

He may ask you to serve in a hidden place where nobody knows your name.

He may ask you to surrender something you have prayed years to receive.

And that is where the question becomes:

Do I obey God because I love Him—or only when obedience benefits me?

Real obedience is revealed when God's instruction contradicts your preference.

Jesus demonstrated this perfectly in Gethsemane:

“Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” — Luke 22:42

That is surrender.

That is love.

That is the death of self-rule.

---

 6. STOP USING GOD'S COMMANDMENTS TO BUILD YOUR IDENTITY

Your identity cannot be:

“I am the person who never fails.”

Because eventually you will discover your weakness.

Your identity must be:

“I belong to Christ.”

Then when you fail, you don't run away from God.

You run toward Him.

When you fall, you repent.

When you discover wrong motives, you surrender them.

When pride is exposed, you don't defend it.

You bring it to the cross.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10

This is the prayer of someone who wants transformation rather than reputation.

---

7. THE DEEPEST OBEDIENCE IS OFTEN THE MOST HUMBLING

Sometimes God will lead you into places where nobody will know what you sacrificed.

Nobody will know the tears.

Nobody will know the prayers.

Nobody will know what you surrendered.

Nobody will applaud your obedience.

And yet you will still obey.

Why?

Because God is enough.

That is when obedience becomes pure.

You are no longer performing before an audience.

You are responding to the voice of the One you love. 🕊️

> “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” — Colossians 3:23

The audience of heaven is enough.

---

THE REAL TEST OF OBEDIENCE

Perhaps the greatest question is not:

“How much do I do for God?”

But:

“How much of my heart truly belongs to Him?”

Because you can have impressive activity without intimacy.

You can have religious language without surrender.

You can have spiritual gifts without spiritual maturity.

You can know Scripture without knowing the heart of the Author.

You can appear righteous while secretly craving the approval of people.

But when love becomes the foundation, something changes.

You obey when nobody is watching.

You remain faithful when there is no applause.

You surrender when your flesh says no.

You forgive when pride says, “Make them pay.”

You wait when impatience says, “Take control.”

You humble yourself when your ego says, “Prove yourself.”

And your prayer becomes:

“Lord, I don't want to obey You merely so that I can feel righteous. I want to obey You because I love You.”

---

A FINAL CALL TO THE HEART

Today, ask God to search the motives behind your obedience.

Not simply:

“Am I doing what God said?”

But:

“Why am I doing it?”

Perhaps you have been trying to prove your worth.

Perhaps you have been comparing your spiritual life with others.

Perhaps you have been serving God while secretly demanding recognition.

Perhaps you have been obeying outwardly while resisting inwardly.

Bring it all before Him.

There is freedom in surrender.

There is rest in grace.

There is purity in obedience motivated by love.

You do not have to prove that you are righteous to the One who already knows you completely.

Come back to the simplicity of love.

Come back to surrender.

Come back to the cross.

Come back to Jesus. ❤️‍🔥

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15

 ENGAGING QUESTION

If God removed every reward, every public recognition, every compliment, and every opportunity to prove yourself—would you still obey Him simply because you love Him?

Let that question search your heart today.

Lord, purify my motives. Teach me to obey You not to prove myself, but because I love You. Amen.
