Psalm 1

​Psalm 1 breaks down the contrast between the righteous and the wicked, illustrating the two paths in life. The righteous are blessed and stable, like a tree planted by water, because they delight in and meditate on God's law. In contrast, the wicked are unstable and will not stand in judgment, like chaff that is blown away by the wind, because they reject God's word.  

The way of the righteous 

Delight and meditation: 

Their focus is on God's law, which they delight in and meditate on day and night. 

Stability and fruitfulness: 

This lifestyle is compared to a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season and having leaves that do not wither, symbolizing stability and prosperity. 

The way of the wicked 

Unstable and unstable: 
The wicked are described as unstable, lacking a firm foundation, and are easily swept away by the forces of life and judgment. 
Lack of substance: 
They are likened to chaff, the worthless part of a plant that is discarded and blown away by the wind. 
Destined for destruction: 
Their path leads to a sure judgment; they are temporary and will not endure. 

The overarching theme 

Two paths: 
The psalm serves as a wisdom introduction, showing that life's choices lead to one of two destinies—a path of blessedness or a path of destruction. 
God's knowledge: 
God is aware of both paths; He knows the way of the righteous and will preserve them, while the way of the wicked will perish
