Two Builders, One Choice
Jesus ended the Sermon on the Mount with a story about two builders. Both heard His teaching. Both built houses. Both faced storms. But only one house remained standing.
The difference wasn't knowledge, because both builders heard the same sermon. The difference wasn't effort, because both worked hard to build. The difference wasn't even the storm, because both faced identical weather.
The difference was the foundation.
Anyone who has installed a retaining wall knows the importance of getting the foundation right. When the first few rows of block aren't quite in line, there's a decision to make: tear it all out and redo it, or keep going and hope for the best. The experienced builder knows that cutting corners at the foundation level will cause drainage issues later. What seems like wasted time and resources now prevents bigger problems down the road.
Many homes have spider web cracks above doorways. You can paint over them, but they come back within months. You might even cover them with drywall and repaint. The crack isn't the problem. The crack is symptomatic of a deeper issue. The house has settled or shifted, creating a separation that no amount of paint can fix.
Jesus is saying the same thing about our lives. The crack isn't the real problem. The foundation is. You can know all the right things, hear all the right sermons, and nod along with every truth. But if you never put it into practice, you're building on sand.
The wise builder doesn't just hear God's Word. He does something with it. He applies it. He obeys it. He builds his entire life on it, decision by decision, day by day.
The foolish builder hears the same truth but never acts on it. He has head knowledge without heart change. He checks boxes without experiencing transformation.
Both builders were active. Both were building something. You're building your life on something right now. The question is what.
Reflection: What are you building your life on? Is it your career? Your reputation? Your own wisdom? Or are you building on the solid rock of obedience to Christ?
